Mission: Suicidal Running Title
=*=Observation Lounge=*=
Acting Captain Mark Rhodes had finally decided to move forward after doing a bit of reading. He now felt somewhat comfortable with the idea of an away mission. He tapped his chest and made a call to the Executive Officer, Chief Medical Officer, Chief Intel Officer and Chief of Security to join him in the observation lounge. Knowing the call was out and it would only be a few moments until they arrived he looked out the window and took in the beauty of a nearby nebula.
The CMO was the first to arrive, she knew exactly what this was about, and decided to get there as soon as possible. "Captain," came her greeting as she entered the room and took a seat.
With an updated report for Mark, Aly headed to the lounge for the meeting that had been called. As she stepped in, she gave a glance to those around before moving to take her seat.
Karim walked into the observation lounge. Nodding to those who'd already arrived, he took his seat next to the Captain.
With everyone having arrived, Mark sat down at the table. "It has been brought to my attention that Medical needs some supplies. Since we are very much outside of Federation space we are going to have to stop at a local bazaar and procure some supplies. First of all this will be low key, I will not take this ship into a foreign port at the present, so you will have to take an auxiliary craft. I am also looking at keeping this a small mission. You four are who I would like to send. Alyssa will keep an eye on mission security, Rinehart will put her ear to the rail and pick up some information about where we are and such. Scarlet knows what we need and Karim will be leading the away team. Thoughts?"
"If I may speak my mind, sir?" Scarlet asked.
"By all means Doctor," said Mark.
Scarlet smiled and looked at everyone, "I know that this is potentially a suicide mission, and I did ask to do this alone for the sake of the safety of the crew. I am thankful, that I won't be alone, however, I would like to say that by helping me, you will be helping every future patient on board this vessel. I also know that trust is a major factor in how this mission goes. With recent dangers that we have experienced, I need to know that we are all on the same page. I need to know that when we get into that ship, no one will want to flee or will endanger the rest of us intentionally."
Nodding, Karim spoke up "I have a question sir, if this mission is to be 'low key' as you say, should we be undercover? And also should we attempt to use concealed or cosmetically modified equipment as to not attract suspicion sir?"
"Good points. I am sure Doctor Rogers can make up some prosthetic. I am going to need Commander Rinehart to get in contact with her Ferengi contacts and procure us a ship, something small. If we are going into uncharted waters I don't want anything to tie back to SF in the area," replied Mark.
"To be honest, just taking off serial numbers and stuff will be adequate," Scarlet hesitated, "it would be like we stole them or bought them on the black market. It would be perfectly normal in one sense for use to own star fleet equipment."
Tierney looked up from her seat and studied the people speaking. "Removing serial numbers isn't going to be enough." She piped in, folding her hands neatly in on the cool table in front of her. Behind her, stars idly danced past as they moved at impulse speed. "I'll speak to my people and see what we can obtain. The Ferengi never do anything cheaply, Captain, we'll need to figure out how to sweeten the pot to make sure they don't just turn around and sell our position for an even greater profit."
"Do not take offense to this Commander," Scarlet glared at her, "We can barely trust our own staff and this mission is one that could easily kill us all to begin with. I suggest we get as little people involved as possible, including the turn coats you speak of."
Clearing his throat, Karim replied "Excuse me Doctor, but as the Captain says, if we go in with what is clearly Starfleet technology we will be putting ourselves at extreme risk of detection. I understand your hesitancy to get others involved, but we need to tread very carefully. I know I would feel more comfortable if we could slip in, passing as traders, and slip out without detection. Perhaps as Commander Rinehart says, the Ferengi may be able to help us do so easily."
Tierney's lips pulled her features into a sweet little smile as she was regarded by the doctor, "You're screwed if you do and damned if you don't, Doctor, no matter what move we make, we're taking risks. You can either trust my knowledge and fall back on the fact I placed a bounty and a kill shot on my own head by giving you lot a firing solution on that other ship." She replied, her voice soft and lilting, "Or you can continue to piddle about the fact I'm Star Fleet Intelligence. My Ferengi contacts are good contacts. We just have to be prepared to spend money" The Commander retorted and then unfolded her hands to brace herself as she leaned across the table, "Unless of course someone wants to volunteer a promise of oomax?"
"You have already said that they may turn for a higher price," Scarlet hissed, "If you'll excuse me. Let me know what the arrangements are, I wash my hands as to the plans on how we get there and with who's help." The doctor stood up and walked toward the door.
"Enough of this," said Mark finally piping up having been sitting back to watch things unfold. "Doctor, take your seat. First of all, when it comes to who we can trust I need everyone in this room to trust everyone else in this room. Without a common sense of trust, we are going no where and mid as well save the UFP the trouble and transmit our coordinates."
"Second, I want to purchase an auxiliary ship for situations just like this. Being this far out into the black, the simple guise of 'we stole this' or 'we bought this' will not be good enough. With an small vessel we can get in and out of any trouble if we need too, I am sure Mr. th'Zarath and myself can see to it we give it a tune up."
"Third, not to say she was never one of us, but Rinehart is one of us now. She put herself into a spot of bother and the second she wants to turn on myself or anyone on this crew I will be the first one to take a shot at her, but until then, if it ever happens, I will trust you," he said looking to the Commander. "And if I can trust her, you all should try to do the same. We are all alone out here folks, all 1134 of us that survived the Battle of Catalpa Nebula are on our own until the Federation becomes whole again. And until that time, we need to start acting like a team. We need to rely on each other, trust each other and help each other out. So lets get started," finished Mark.
"I wash my hands of how this is done, sir," Scarlet hissed, not sitting back down, "But I will still take part in this mission and I will tolerate how we get this job done, and whomever I am with."
"And when we inevitably end up in a life and death situation and one of the comrades you are standing shoulder to shoulder with saves your life, you can thank them," said Mark flatly.
"Of course I will, but need i remind you that I asked to do this alone so that I wouldn't endanger the lives of innocent people," she replied bluntly.
The Captain spoke before the spirited half-breed could fire of another round of quick lipped retorts. The sound of his voice, the new found authority apparent, saw Tierney's teeth finding purchase against her tongue, stilling it in her mouth and keeping her from saying something she'd likely be sorry for later. His thin veiled threat against her life, however, sent a chill along the length of her spine. "My family has a long history of serving the Enterprise in all of her many forms. My loyalty is to her regardless of who is or isn't the Captain." She finally replied, looking between the faces that sat and stood around the table. "I ask that you plot my death for a later date, when you're clear of danger. Until then? Let me do what I do best."
With that, she pushed away from the table and found her feet, starting to feel uncomfortable in that circle of people. "I'll get you your ship, Captain. Just be prepared to transfer funds. Permission to be dismissed?"
"So, we pay off people who could 'change their minds' for a higher price? We trust that apparently? Ok," Scarlet walked out frustrated, and went to go find Thelin.
"We have work to do, everyone is dismissed. Everyone out," said Mark somewhat unhappy that this is how the senior staff was acting. But he understood that everyone was on edge, and a sense of camaraderie was to be earned not demanded or ordered. "In my office," said Mark standing looking to Karim.
Karim stood and nodded. He was a bit confused about what had happened. He wasn't used to such ... spirited meetings. Without a word, he followed Rhodes out of the room.
