JDL - EO x 2 - Ens Jones & Ens Peters - "Beep Beep"

Mission: Holy Cow

Jon stopped by his quarters to drop off the PADD Dr. Avery had given him with his exercises on it, then he headed down to engineering. A failure by the system to route a medical emergency call to Sickbay was a serious problem, and one that needed to be looked at quickly. He logged into the computer, submitted a quick report on the issue as he understood it, flagged Lieutenant sh'Thrass as the source of the information — she was the only lieutenant on the ship who was also Andorian, so Jon was willing to bet that she was the lieutenant he saw in sickbay.

He signed out a repair kit, and looked around to see if anyone was available to help him. He hoped it would be a nothing fix, but he knew the emergency response systems were carefully designed and maintained just because they were so critical; the chance of it being something small to fix was slim. He spotted a tall ensign, and waved him down.

"Are you busy? I have a repair request that should probably be handled right away, and I could use a second person to help, if you're available," Jon explained.

"I'm sure I can assist you, yes, i'll follow you!" Gordon said, signing off of his console, and grabbing his personal toolkit. "I'm Gordon, and you are?" Gordon said, trailing off.

"Jon Peters, just transferred up from waste reclamation last week," came the reply and the offered hand to shake as they started walking. "You may have noticed my arm in a sling if you saw me around. I just came back from getting cleared to recycle the sling and return to full duty."

"So, waste reclamation aye? How did you find that?" Gordon asked, having never been to waste reclamation before.

"It left me feeling like a social pariah, I'm glad to be out of there," Jon insisted, leading the way to the internal communications system. "How are you with the communication systems? Particularly the emergency response systems?"

"I know my way around it." Gordon said, nodding at the same time.

"Good," Jon returned, "There was a problem with a call not being routed to sickbay when it should have been earlier. Hopefully it's nothing big, and the person who was brought in looks like she's going to be okay anyways, but it could have been a matter of life or death." As they reached the access panel for the communication system, Jon logged into the maintenance systems and indicated he was being assisted by Ensign Jones. "Where do you think we should start?"

"Let's run a diagnostic of the comm's systems first, it might be that somethings been changed during another repair, and we haven't noticed it till now. After that we should take a look at the Emergency Subroutines. How does that sound?" Gordon asked, looking at the console.

"It's always reassuring when someone says exactly what I'm thinking, just like you just did," Jon answered. "How about I start the diagnostic on the main system, and you start it on the emergency subroutine?"

"Sounds good to me!" Gordon said, heading over to a secondary console and logging in.

Jon grinned at the enthusiasm of the other engineer as his fingers flowed over the console in front of him. He engaged the diagnostics, turning on the verbose output with the analysis, and watched the data flow across his screen. As he watched, nothing seemed out of the ordinary, but he knew he was only skimming at this point and it was likely whatever the problem was, was going to be small or well hidden to have been missed during normal maintenance.

"You got anything yet?" Gordon asked, getting out his PADD and scrolling through the data that was being automatically linked from his terminal.

"Not yet-" Jon answered, glancing over. As he turned back to the scrolling data, he leaned closed to the console, and scrolled back up through it. "The diagnostic should have flagged this. Gordon, come here and look at this." He waved his fellow engineer over, then saw the PADD in hand. "Hang on, let me send it to your PADD." He pressed a couple buttons.

"My, my, my, what have we here then..." Gordon said as he saw what Jon had found. "Well I think we found our problem, don't you?" He asked.

"Kind of odd though, the standard diagnostics should have found it." He scratched his head behind his ear as he peered at it. "Also odd that it would only be triggered on calls relating to a particular combadge's hardcoded ID. That doesn't seem accidental, does it?"

"I would say not, my friend. I think we should take this to the Captain, he should know about this." Gordon said, worried about the fact that they were in way over their heads.

"We'll file a report with all this data, send a copy to Ka-" Jon cleared his throat, blushed slightly, and dropped his eyes down to the console. "Command Dhej, as well as the Chiefs of Security and Intel," Jon insisted, already directing the computer to collect the diagnostic data together. "We may want to keep a hard copy when we submit the report. Just in case."

"Sounds good to me, I've got a copy on my PADD, so if you take one as well, then we shouldn't lose it!" Gordon said, nodding at the man.

"Good, good," Jon smiled, and glanced at Gordon. His slip of the tongue seems to have gone unnoticed.

"Anything else you need me for?" Gordon asked, packing up his toolkit.

"No, no, thanks for the help," Jon smiled wide at Gordon.
