".......Jackson why in the hell haven't we heard anything from engineering about these issues?" Nanee asked frustrating first it was the bio-beds sensors, then the emergency medical transport not alerting anyone and then the filters not seeing a foreign bodies entering the ship.
"I don't know why don't you call down." Jackson said walking into her office looking tired as well. "I mean I've been a bit busy dealing with your patient." With that Jackson turned and walked out. Shaking her head Nanee walked back over to her desk to contact engineering.
"Dame I need answers?" Nanee said when the communique was answered on the other end. "I can't have these issues popping up in sickbay especially when it could risk the lives of the crew."
"What the hell do you want to hear?" asked The Dame blowing hair out of her face as she answered the comm chatter wedged in a service crawlspace. "Things break. Give me 5 min to cut myself out of this corner."
"Lieutenant how many engineers and engineer mates do you have under your command?" Nanee asked.
"98," replied The Dame. She tapped her chest, "Ensign Jones, please report to sickbay. Take your tool kit, the Chief of Medicine requires some assistance, and I am a tad... indisposed at the present."
Nanee just smirked as she waited for a engineer to arrive she also knew that this was what drove people away from her but she couldn't have her sickbay in this kind of order.
"On my way." Gordon replied, picking up his tool kit and heading for sickbay. As he walked in he looked over at the chief medial officer. "What seems to be the problem then lieutenant?" Gordon asked, stopping in the doorway.
Nanee just looked at the ensign, "what do you mean, what seems to be the problem. I sent a report to engineering days ago listing what the issues are. So I suggest you go over to that wall panel and pull it up." Nanee said furious looking at the ensign, "and these issues aren't just a run of the mill issues these are issues that can get someone killed."
"Ok, ok, calm your tits woman!" Gordon said as he walked over to the wall panel and tapped a few buttons. When he couldn't find said report, he tapped his commbadge. "Jones to Engineering, has anyone down there got the repair list for Sickbay; I can't seem to find it." Gordon said, looking at the fuming Trill Officer behind him.
Calm your tits woman!? Shrugging the fact that he said that out loud to a women and a superior officer that impressed her. But she didn't allow him to see that as she waited for him to find the reports that she knew were sent especially seeing as an engineer was actually here when one of the issues happened when he was here.
While The Dame was away from main engineering, Ensign Marlowe was overseeing efforts from the main terminal. "Marlowe here, report says the internal optical scanner is out of calibration and the surgical bay needs a diagnostics."
"Thanks Marlowe, i'll see what I can do up here!" Gordon replied, dumping the scans he'd just taken of the surgical bay onto his PADD. "Right, if you've calmed down now we can get to work!" Gordon said, scanning the optical scanner, and dumping those onto a separate PADD. "So, it looks as if the surgical bay is draining to much power from the EPS grid, and that's managed to cause the conduits on the bed to overload, probably explaining the problems you've been having up here. The optical scanner just need recalibrating, I can do that now for you!" Gordon said, looking at the medical officer.
"Ensign I'm well aware of those issues. The issues I'm talking about are the bio-filters that allowed a patient to be beamed into my sickbay with a unknown virus running amok and prior to that myself nor my staff were alerted to a emergency beam in. I need those fixed before those other things." Nanee said standing up and walking over to the wall console and pulling up the medical copy of the engineering request for support.'
"I'll get to work on it!" Gordon said, doing a diagnostic on the bio-filters, and taking a few scans of the internal comms network. "I know that there has been some problems with the internal comms systems, and that myself and one of the other engineers found something the other day, which we can't currently discuss, but it seems to be working fine for now!" Gordon said, waiting for the diagnostic to finish.
"Good......." Nanee said taking a seat at her desk, "let me know when you're done with all the repairs. I don't want you leaving until I'm satisfied that everything is working."
"There seems to be a virus, which prevented the bio-filters from isolating said patient, it seems to be linked to....no....it can't be....Ensign Jones to Ensign Peters!" Gordon said, tapping his commbadge.
"Peters here, what can I do for you?" Jon dropped the floor grate back in place in the jefferies tube, then closed his tricorder. He'd finally tracked down the source of the eps fluctuations he'd been chasing on and off between other jobs for the last week.
"I need you to get down to Sickbay, pronto, do you remember that virus we found the other day? I think I've found another one." Gordon said, still gathering data from the virus.
"Really? Wow, I thought we patched it," Jon said as he started for the Junction between levels — it would be quicker than waiting for a turbolift for the two decks he'd have to climb. "I saved a copy of the faulty code, but it was isolated and shouldn't of gotten loose again. Do you think-" Jon stopped himself mid questions, realizing if the person who did it was still on the ship, they could easily tap into comtraffic. "I'll be right there. If you could trouble yourself to isolate a copy of the code on a PADD for me before you patch anything, I'd be much obliged."
"Already done and waiting for you!" Gordon said, saving the code of the virus to his PADD, before transferring it to a second PADD as a backup.
It didn't take more than ten minute for Jon to finish his trip to sickbay, and he strode right in looking for Ensign Jones. "Have you had a chance to run a comparison between this one and the first?" he asked as he walked up to the other engineer without paying any attention to anyone else around.
"The base of the coding is the same, but the actual subroutines of the code are different, presumably so it can affect the different sickbay systems. It also seems that it's adapting to whatever I try to do to it, so it's going to be harder to take down than the last one!" Gordon said, handing the other PADD to Jon.
"Adapting?" Jon repeated as her started to scroll through the PADD. He let out a low whistle and shook his head. "Whoever did this knew just enough to be dangerous, but not enough to realize how plum stupid they were being," he muttered in amazement. "They put a low level AI into this beast. I reckon that when we cut it off from hunting Rinehart, it got bored and started wandering. We're going to have to make us a lasso."
"Update?" Nanee said walking up to the pair hoping for some good news.
"Working on it! Go and sit down, have a cup of tea, or whatever you drink, and we'll let you know when we're done, this is delicate work!" Gordon said, not looking up from his PADD.
Smirks Nanee nodded and went to get some tea finding this ensign more and more intriguing than again she may just like the fact the young ensign knows how and when to stand up for himself or she sees a lot of herself in him.
Jon nearly choked at the exchange between the doctor and Gordon. He was certainly tongue tied until long after the Trill woman had left again. "Gordon, you seem to have a problem with your brain being missing. She's a senior officer," Jon finally stammered out, shaking his head and trying to focus on the code in his PADD.
"If she doesn't like it she can report me.....I hate having people who don't know what they're talking about looking over my shouler, even if it is a superior officer!" Gordon said, looking at the other officer, before looking back at his PADD and looking through the coding of the virus. "Hang on, this bit looks different to the rest of the code!" He said, pointing at a larger part of the code that he hadn't seen in the last virus.
"You realize there are ways to scare them off without risking your commission, right?" Jon all but muttered, continuing to shake his head in disbelief as he glanced at Gordon's PADD to see where in the code he was looking. He quickly scrolled to the same section of code in his own PADD, and his eyes widened as he looked. "I think it's still trying to change. Look, it's trying to re-enable the link to the main computer, but it's different than your copy." He held up his PADD next to Gordon's, allowing the code on the two PADDs to be displayed side by side.
"She hasn't tried to kill me yet! Hell, I think she's actually starting to like me, maybe!" Gordon said with a chuckle, tapping his PADD and changing the view.
"Then keep your flirting with her off duty," Jon returned, rolling his eyes and tapping at the frame of the PADD to draw Gordon's attention. "Did you already try to patch this in the sickbay systems?"
"No, why?" Gordon asked, looking at Jon's PADD.
"Okay, good, maybe we can trace it back to it's source," Jon answered, and shoved his PADD into his tool kit. "Since we patched the original problem in the com system, but it came back, it makes me think there's a mother virus somewhere hidden elsewhere in the ship systems." He pulled up some diagnostic programs on the computer terminal Gordon had been working at, and accessed the systems with the malicious code in them. "You watch the output on this program, and tell me where it traces back to?"
"Ok!" Gordon said watching his PADD as Jon ran the diagnostics. "Ok, I think I have something. The Mother Virus seems to be located in the main deflector array, I guess that should be our next stop once we're done here!" Gordon said, tapping away at his PADD.
"Deflector array, huh? And I'll bet there ain't a thing that appears wrong there," Jon mused, leaning over to glance at Gordon's PADD. "Probably best if we clean that varmint out of there first, to keep it from just spawning more, then go hunting for all its spawn. Can you keep this contained, and I'll go to the defector array?"
"Of course I can, they didn't make me an Engineer for nothing you know!" Gordon said to Jon as he left the Sickbay. He then motioned Nanee over with a wave of his hand.
Nanee decided to play along wanting to see how big this kids ego could get, "ensign?" She asked as she sauntered to up to him enjoying seeing peoples egos inflate.
"It looks like we've sorted the problem for you, and despite my colleagues warnings you haven't reprimanded me for earlier, so i'd say we're all good?" Gordon said.
"I'm glad to hear that my infirmary is finally in working order. And as for that reprimand it's still early." Nanee said giving him a wink.
"I'm sure you'll forgive me in time!" Gordon said, returning her wink.
Nanee couldn't help but let a smirk come upon her face as she watched the ensign.
