Mission: Holy Cow
Location: Enterprise Security Offices
Timeline: Just Prior to AT Mission

Ah, the sweet smell of fear and hard work, mixed in with sweat and testosterone. This was home; this was security. The acting executive officer had come from here. This was were her roots lay. In one sense she knew she'd always miss it, but she needed a job that would mean she could look after her son. A job that had smaller risk of being in the medical bay and to give her more time with her boy. This new position, though came with higher risks, meant she'd have that.

Adrian had heard about the Chief of Security here. She knew that it was still a little controversial, but equality in Starfleet meant everything. Everyone was more that their species, and the woman hoped this man would be more than just a Romulan. She looked around security with a sense of nostalgia and then arrived at the chief's office, "Tr'Verelan?"

Starfleet Security was a conundrum unto itself for Maec. Romulans preferred swift efficiency and rules that dictated ones actions focused on these aspects. In Starfleet the preference was towards a meticulous verity with a focal point that emphasized a sort of gentleness. The dilemma of how to rectify the two moral aspects to fit his role at the Enterprise’ temporary Security Chief had brought him a moderate feeling unease. It didn’t help that all of his subordinates were suspicious- not that he could blame them. In a similar situation Maec was sure he’d feel the same way. Fortunately there seemed to be a commonality between his new and former subordinates: the love of weapons. It didn’t take long for a crowd to gather around his office as Maec had set one of the newest models of the Romulan disruptor pistol on his desk for a young security officer to study and then hold. The sight of the foreign weapon made them absolutely giddy and quickly eased the tension- though likely not the lingering suspicion. As the commotion grew Maec heard his name amid the chatter and meandered his way through the small crowd until he found himself standing in front of a woman “yes?”

"My name is Adrianna Hunter, I'm the new acting Executive Officer," she smiled, "Thought I would say hello."

Executive Officer? Maec silently studied her for a moment as the commotion continued behind him. She was new and not from the current compliment- he would have recognized her face if she was. There was a sense of trepidation with the unknown. For all Maec knew she could have easily been one of Tierney’s Ilk- one of those silly Starfleet Intelligence, minus the latter, types. A smile, warm enough, but with just enough of an edge to offer a warning to anyone who could read deeper into Romulan expressions. Quite diplomatic. “Greetings Lieutenant Commander.” He bowed but his eyes carefully followed the woman never losing sight of her “I am Centurion tr’Verelan here to serve the will of Starfleet at the behest of the Star Empire.”

"You don't need to be so formal to me," she smiled comfortingly, "I used to be a head of security, too." She noticed his scepticism, "I would love to keep up with the physical training too, if you ever have the time."

“Formality is a natural tendency towards superiors unless one possesses the brutish demeanor of a vile Klingon.” Maec smiled while studying the woman. Her physique did hold some truth to her claim of having served in a security capacity- certainly she appeared at least physically capable of sparring with him. “It would be an honor.”

"I must say, I hope that regardless of race, you are being treated more or less as an equal on board," Adrianna looked to her PaDD a moment.

“I imagine I am.” Maec said, his eyes momentarily glancing towards the crowd “but that you must question such things tell me that perhaps things are not quite equal.” He always found Federation axioms intriguing- especially this belief in ‘equality.’ Over the centuries they have championed their beliefs and yet there was something truly hypocritical about it all. Their entire morality was based on terran domination. Was there any true equality in the Federation? He smiled politely.

"Not necessarily different," Adrian replied, "Just an opinion is neither fact nor fiction. If someone is not nice to you, who am I to say whether it is discrimination or banter amongst friends?"

Banter? Maec felt a tinge of bitterness against the woman’s naiveté but forced himself to react otherwise. For a split second it looked as if the Arrain had just bit into something quite sour but his expression quickly lightened and he simply smiled while offering the woman a brief nod “indeed, who are you to say?” His smile sharpened “but alas I do find this subject tiring commander. I hope you will offer me any insight you may have. I am certain I will need guidance to conform myself with Federation policies.”

"It's not that different from security jobs in general, to be fair," she smiled, "I guess it's just priorities that change. It's easy enough and I'm sure you'll be fine. Any way, I will leave you be, and if you ever feel like taking me up on that sparring thing let me know."

"Certainly." He smiled- hidden from her was the contempt that seethed through that look in the form of ivory daggers. How one could get by with such ambivalence Maec was uncertain.

She turned to leave but stopped herself, "Oh, one more thing. If you do take me up on my offer, don't underestimate me."

Maec held his smile and simply nodded at her. Once she disappeared beyond the doorway he scowled.
