Lieutenant Jayne Nolan adjusted his uniform one more time before hitting the chime to the Captain's office. Jayne had met countless fleet officers having worked at Fleet Science Ops, but he felt an odd sense of nervousness wash over him. He really was entering brave new worlds with taking a position shipboard. Having heard a call from within to enter he stepped into the Captain's Office swiftly. He dropped his leather messenger bag off his shoulder, slipping a padd out of a pocket and placed the bag to the left of the door against the wall, then moved to in front of the Captain's desk.
He found a ridged stance, "Lieutenant Jayne Nolan, newly assigned Science Officer, reporting for duty sir." He stood with his arms crossed holding the padd with his conformation orders behind his back.
Looking up from his console, Karim said "Understood Lieutenant Nolan. I assume you have transfer orders for me?"
"Yessir," said Jayne producing the padd from behind his back and held it out to the Captain. "My orders sir. As you can see I came aboard at Cold Station Theta, having been transferred from the office of Fleet Science Ops."
Nodding as he acknowledged the orders and put the padd aside, he replied "May I ask why you are just reporting in now Lieutenant?"
"Things were hectic after we departed Cold Station Theta sir. Science has had our hands full trying to keep up with all the new opportunities for discovery," said Jayne in a sensible tone.
Accepting the man's reply, and slightly impressed that he hadn't reacted to the slight dressing down, Karim replied "Understood Lieutenant. Take a seat please." Once the man was seated, he added "You will be serving under Lieutenant Keras tr'Slayton, our Chief Science Officer. If you haven't already met him, I would suggest you seek him out." Pausing for a moment, he added I' m curious Lieutenant, what is your scientific speciality? Our department is slightly understaffed at the moment, and it would be helpful to know what spots we have left to fill."
As Jayne took a seat the Captain asked his question. "My PhD focus was Xenobiology, both botanical and zoological. While at the academy I took the time to increase and diversify my skill sets. I set myself up to be on the frontier of new science, and after being behind a desk for a number of years I decided to head out into the universe. Best I figure, sir, I am a jack of a lot of trades, and even a master of few," said Jayne candidly. "I will check in with the Chief as soon as possible."
Nodding with interest, Karim replied "I'm happy to hear you are interested in xenobiology Lieutenant. It is a strong interest of mine as well." Pausing, he said "Was there anything you wanted to go over before I let you get back to work?"
"If there are any assignments you would like assistance with," said Jayne, "I am more than willing to help, sir. If you ever need help, I am a comm channel away sir. Also it was nice to meet you, I am ready to make Enterprise a home."
Smiling, Karim stood and extended a hand "I will definitely keep that in mind. Welcome aboard the Enterprise Lieutenant, I will see you soon. Your dismissed."
Jayne saluted, collected his bag and departed the office.
