Joint Back Duty Log | LtCmdr Rhodes & Lt Sato-Pryce & Ens Rhys | "yr un sy'n datrys, y torrwr, a'r madfall taranau"

Posted on 241404.10 @ 1:13pm by Lieutenant Rhiannon Sato-Pryce & Acting Captain Mark Rhodes & Ensign Thee Rhys

Mission: Where no man has gone before.
Location: Main Engineering & Bridge
Timeline: takes place at least 12hr before "Arrival"

Riding the Turbolift was Rhiannon and what appeared to be a 2m tall dinosaur in a Starfleet uniform. It was a little unsettling, but at the same time she was intrigued.

"Hi," she said. facing...him? She couldn't tell. "I'm Lt Sato-Pryce, Chief Operations Officer. And you?"

Rhys did his best not to smile, knowing that it caused many humans great apprehension and fear. He had experienced it many times already in the short time that he was on board, and he would be lying if he said it didn't bother him. But he kept reminding himself that it wasn't him, per se, it was what he represented in their cultural psyches. It was only right to give them a wide berth and allow them to realize he really wasn't so bad.

"A pleasure to meet you, Lieutenant. I am Ensign Thee Rhys, Chief Tactical Officer. I must admit, you are one of the few humans who have initiated a conversation with me since I've been on board. I appreciate it."

Rhiannon shrugged, with a pleasant smile, "You're interesting. I like interesting. I've never seen a Pahk-Wa-Thanh up close before. Oh!" she put her hand over a mouth a moment, "I'm sorry, I don't mean to say you're an oddity or freak or anything. Just interesting." she quickly said, facing the turbolift doors again, embarrassed and worried that she'd insulted him.

The turbolift arrived in Engineering, and they both stepped out. One of the junior Engineers froze at the sight of Ensign Rhys. Rhiannon took the opportunity to ask, "Where's Commander Rhodes?"

"Over there sir," said Ensign Monroe as he pointed to the Main terminal at the man hunched over it.

Rhiannon and Thee approached the Main Terminal, "Lieutenant Commander Mark Rhodes?" Rhiannon asked.

"Yes?" he said looking up from the terminal. "How can I help you?"

"I'm Lieutenant Sato-Pryce, Chief Operations, and this is Ensign Rhys, Chief Tactical. We're to consult on the Phased Disruptors."

"Ah yes," said Mark. "It was my goal to get upstairs and speak with you folks before the end of the day. Forgive me, weapons testing wasn't the first thing on my plate today. Ive been dealing with faulty EPS grids around the ship that decided to pop up."

He pushed a few buttons on the Main Engineering Terminal and pulled up the schematics. "My teams report that the Phase Disruptors are installed and ready for testing. I looked them over myself a day or two after I came a board but again, had more pressing things to take care of between then and now."

"That's understandable. Will the EPS issues be a problem what with the new weapons' power requirements?"

"It shouldn't," said Mark pulling up the effected areas of faulty grid work. "None of the effected sections are near the weapon power grid. But I am learning the more I think things are not connected on this ship, the more bass ackwards they are."

"How so? Do we have access to the Odyssey Class Design Brief from ASDB? That might shed some light on why things are the way they are." Rhiannon offered.

Thee looked at Commander Rhodes with a puzzled expression. "If I may interrupt, sirs...'bass ackwards'? I'm afraid I'm not quite familiar with that human expression."

"It means its that something has been done the wrong way or in a way to make your job harder down the road," said Mark looking up to the tall Pahk-Wa-Thanh. "I have gone over the EPS Grid Distribution Network schematics time and time again, for some reason the grid work seems to be funny in places..."

Rhys looked over the schematics in front of him. "Ah! I understand now...thank you, Commander. I am forced to echo Lt. Sato-Pryce's earlier question. Is there an anomaly in the design of our EPS grid?"

"An anomaly? No. But there is a series of things that looked like a good idea on the drawing board, but prove to be poor in application," said Mark shrugging. "Its the way of things. They look great on a drawing board, but always need a little tweaking to get to 100% efficient. That's what we are dealing with right now."

Rhys shrugged. "I see...it seems like we'd definitely enjoy the benefits of a shakedown cruise."

"No need to tell me twice," exhaled Mark. "As I said, everything should work, and we need to make sure they do work before we end up in a situation where we would want to use them."

Rhiannon nodded, "Well, shall we begin?"

"Oh yes," said Mark. "We can start by sending intermittent bursts of energy as a way to cold start them, from what I have read its more efficient for your first power up," said Mark as he tapped a few buttons. "Keep an eye on that please," he pointed to Rhiannon and to a position on the terminal. "Ensign, can you keep an eye on this, anything over 8.6 and we need to shut the system down."

Rhiannon stood in front of the terminal. "Ready when you are."

Rhys nodded and took a step forward, keeping his gaze steady on the readouts. "Ready sir."

Mark started to send power to the weapons grid. Slowly but surly everything powered up without incident. He looked to the two officers: "Well... lets find something to test these bad lads on. Power is at 100% and holding. I will keep them powered up and monitor any fluctuations. We should go to the bridge and try a weapons test now and see what these puppies can do."

Rhys monitored the power levels as the new weapons were brought online. Seeing nothing out of the ordinary, he turned back to the two humans and extended his arm toward the turbolift. "After you, sirs."

Rhiannon stepped into the turbolift, everything was going well... Maybe a little too well. She was waiting for the other shoe to drop, so to speak. That, oddly enough, reminded her. "Rhodes? I was wondering if, after this, you could assist me with the construction of the new Operations Lab on Deck 6?"

"Yes," said Mark as he followed the other two officers. "Shouldn't be any problem at all."

Rhys followed silently as the trio entered the turbolift, lost in his thoughts.

The turbolift opened and the three officers exited onto the bridge. Mark never really felt truly comfortable on the bridge, he always felt his place was in Main Engineering, it was one of his quirks. He moved over to the Engineering I terminal and looked to the other two officers. "Ready on my end, someone try a little target practice. Give them a good work out."

Rhiannon did a quick sensor scan of nearby space, "I have a rogue comet, bearing 248, mark 281. About a lightyear out. Typical make up, boring geologically speaking. Should be an ideal target."

Rhys, after parking himself at the tactical station, ran through a quick diagnostic. "Yes, yes. That should work. Weapons are online, locking on target." Rhys' claws danced on the console, aligning the ships targeting scanners with the comet while compensating for the comets speed and trajectory. "Firing..

Rhys looked up at the main viewer as the weapons lanced out from the main hull. "Fascinating," he remarked.

"Every appears to be holding together," said Mark looking to the other to officers. "I think we can call that a success. Granted we are going to need to put them through their paces, but this is a good start."

Rhiannon scanned the remaining fragments, "The dispersal pattern of the phased disrupting beam seems a little off. I mean they're well within the operating specs we were given, but it could be better." Rhiannon looked at the data, "But, yeah, I agree a success, there was minimal effect on other systems. Though there is a 10% drop in available power in the standard phaser systems, but I think that's to be expected. We should take this report to the XO."

"Everything looks good on my end, I will compile my reports as well," said Mark standing and looking to the two officers.

Rhiannon nodded.

"Yes sir," replied Rhys.
