Mission: Reconstruction and Refocus

=*=Commanding Officers Office=*=

Captain Rozen Coo had just arrived back at his office from taking a tour of the Science Labs. Being a scientist himself, he found the potential for exploration and discovery on this ship to be limitless. He was about to head back to his quarters, and call it a 'day', when he heard a chime at his door.

Rozen shifted a padd or three on his desk and called out to the door, "Come."

Hober poked his head into the room before the rest of his body followed him. He carried with both hands an engineering readiness report that he was sent by the acting chief, Michael Baker, to the bridge. Mallow thought nothing of it and figured he would be handing it into a senior officer; he did not think the Captain was in! They were still hanging out in drydock after all. He approached the desk and took in the presence of the current Captain of the almighty Enterprise.

"Hello Lieutenant..." started Rozen drifting off, not entirely sure who the LtJG was standing before him. "Is there something in particular I can assist you with?" asked Rozen warmly and invitingly.

Mallow looked down at the padd in his hand and came to, remembering his purpose. "For you captain, ship readiness report from Lieutenant Baker... from engineering. Results from diagnostics... well not all diagnostics... some installations and manual checks to..." He cut himself short realizing he was droning on. He offered the padd forward.

Rozen took the padd from the Lieutenant. Scanning it quickly he looked back to the Lieutenant, "Fantastic. So how are you doing since coming aboard? Enjoying the new posting yet?" asked Rozen. He knew that a vast majority of the crew had been rotated out, so it was a safe bet to assume this officer was new to the Enterprise.

Mallow was expecting to be immediately dismissed and make a hasty exit, the captain's warm smile and inviting question were not expected. Without the padd in his hands, he didn't know what to do with them, "Things are good. Yup good. Got here 4 days ago. The transport was pretty empty...so..yeah that was nice," he tried to put his hands in his nonexistent pockets, "..sir".

"Where abouts was your last post?" asked Rozen with a tone of curiosity. "Pardon my manners, feel free to have a seat," he said gesturing to one of the chairs in front of his desk.

Hober looked to the chair and then back to Rozen, and then back the captain waiting for him to sit first. "I originally got posted and came from the Luisa, haven't been on another ship until now."

"Well I am glad to have you aboard," said Rozen taking his seat. "A quiet career isn't a bad thing."

Hober took his seat as well. I can't wait to throw this in Ellena's face, met the captain before her. Score. "I hope the Enterprise isn't too quiet. I am excited for some challenge...Not that I want to see us in danger all the time...but you know...danger can be fun."

"I prefer an adventure," said Rozen with a wide smile. "I am sure there will be plenty to keep everyone busy once we set out. Our first mission takes us out past known space in the Gamma Quadrant, where the lines of the map still haven't been written. I am sure there are plenty of challenges ahead."

Hober's eyebrow raised. "Gamma Quadrant eh? Even with slipstream that will be a bit of a trip. I agree adventure is a better word than danger."

"Thankfully the slipstream helps avoid too much trouble along the way," said Rozen. "Early in my career I was the Chief Science officer of a Starbase in the Gamma Quadrant. Its been ages ago however. My first real taste of frontier living."

"How did you flip from sedentary to ship living? Those are two quite different life styles," Hober asked feeling much more at ease. The captain still held his inviting demeanor and Hober suspected it was genuine and not just a front.

"I spent a number of years on the starbase, Zetari Station, 204-B, as Chief Science Officer. The commander of the station give me enough leniency, because our staffing numbers were enormous, to provide me a small science vessel I could use to wander around Gamma Quadrant every once in a while.

"After the station was destroyed in 2414, I was selected to head up Starfleet Science here on Earth. In the last few years I remembered why I liked the frontier so much, freedom. Not being chained to a desk. Luckily, being the CO of the most advance science vessel in the fleet allows such a lifestyle," finished Rozen with a wide grin.

Hober whistled, "You get around it seems. Also you know you're valuable when a department head on a station gets to gallivant around, and then as science -- is director the right word? -- gets to chose the Enterprise."

"Yes, Director of Starfleet Science. Honored beyond the pale," smiled Rozen. "Hard work and dedication pays off, I can assure you of that. It never goes unnoticed," he said with a warm smile.

"Do you ever eat with your senior staff?" Hober asked. The gears in his head whirred in a slightly different direction. In his attempt to beat Ellena in recognition, he figured it wouldn't hurt to stand out from the crowd.

Taken slightly off beat by the question Rozen took the question in stride, "of course. Once we are underway I am always more than willing to share the good food that Chef prepares. I am quite fond of his cooking, but don't let my wife know," the latter half of the sentence he jokingly said in a low whisper.

"I will be sharing a meal with you and the other senior staff as your new Chief Engineer in the near future," Hober Mallow said shamelessly.

"By all means," replied Rozen. "The more the merrier. Pardon my manners, however, I do have some paperwork to square away before my EOD. If you wouldn't mind sending my regards to the Chief, I would greatly appreciate it." Rozen stood up and outstretched a hand for a handshake. "Welcome aboard."

Hober stood up and took the handshake. "Thank you captain, I will pass along the regards to Lieutenant Baker." Smooth. Mallow found the invitation and the subsequent say hello to you're current boss for me humorous; worth a shot. He took his cue and turned about to exit. He waited for the recognizable swish behind him before he let out a long breath. He moseyed over to the turbo lift with a grin on his lips.

Rozen found something about the Lieutenant very interesting, but couldn't quite put his finger on it. Sending a message to the CEO to organize a supper party once they were underway, Coo switch backed to his end-of-day paperwork.
