Mission: Reconstruction and Refocus
=*=Science Lab 3=*=
Captain Rozen Coo had been wandering around the Science Labs for the last hour inspecting new instruments, equipment, experiments and research being brought aboard. He continued to wander until he found a young Lieutenant JG focused very intent on an experiment on a lab bench.
Rozen watched curiously for a while before chiming in with a question, "Have you tried a Passive high-resolution series scan?"
Jason had been working hard in the wake of the new provision of kit from drydock. Over the past week had had been tasked by his chief with overseeing the installation of hardware and the ensuing testing and sign-off prior to their impending departure. He was fully engaged in his task when he heard a voice over his shoulder
Realizing that someone was there he became mildly perturbed, "What?!" he responded, "Why would I do that now?"
"I'm only half-way through with the acceptance testing, passive scanning mode wouldn't be until tomorrow!" he added sharply.
"Use of that sensor band allows more refined calibration down to .02 microns," replied Rozen coolly. "Cuts down on a cascading calibration error. If you narrow the field now, it makes it easier to dial in later," said Rozen leaning his lower back on a lab table and crossing his arms.
Who does this guy think he is?' thought Jason as he looked up from his console and turned his head slowly as he exhaled for effect, showing his displeasure. Once his head reached a certain angle he suddenly realized exactly who this was, or rather he rapidly assessed the uniform color and number of pips on the collar and figured out who exactly it was.
"Captain!" he quickly exclaimed, realizing his mistake and the fact that he has just been rund to his CO. "I ...I didn't realise it was you..."
"You don't say?" chuckled Rozen as he stepped up and offered a hand out to Jason for handshake. "Nice to meet you Jason, Captain Preston always had good things to say about you."
Somewhat taken aback by the fact that he has just been rude to the captain of the ship he took a second to understand what Coo was saying. Shaking his hand he processed what the captain had just said. "Captain Preston?" he hesitated "He did? You knew him?"
"Of course," replied Rozen. "He was my first Chief Science Officer, when he got his commission on another post, I took over for him. When I read your personnel file I knew any student of James was more than capable of handling themselves on the Enterprise?"
"Also, your record is quite impressive, less a few interesting tidbits about a few ...hem... indiscretions during your academy days," replied Rozen with a wink.
Holy crap! This guys knew his stuff..he shouldn't have been surprised, he was the CO of the Enterprise...and he'd no doubt paid attention to the file of an admiral's son with a number of comments on his record. Jason decided to play that part down and focus on the good. "Thank you Sir..Preston was a good chief, but you already know that. I aim to carry on what he taught us..especially on the Enterprise."
"It's good to know his legacy carries on with us sir."
"Of course," replied Rozen leaning back against the lab station again. "I did want to let you know I have selected you to be the Assistant Chief Science Officer. Anytime the Chief is busy or occupied, you are my go to understood?"
"Yes, Sir, that's very good of you Sir..you can count on me" replied Jason.
"Fantastic," replied Rozen. "I do have some information I wanted to pass along," he said placing a padd on Jason's Lab station. "I want you to work with Ensign Maria Lionza, one of our biologists, to start breaking down this signal. We are headed to the Gamma Quadrant. We will be underway tomorrow to the origin of this signal.
"I want you to work with the Ensign because there is almost an organic quality to this distortion," said Rozen clarifying. "Once we are underway, we will hold a briefing and bring the Senior Staff up to speed for the coming mission."
"Who knows, you put in your time, maybe you could be Chief someday?" said Rozen with a wide smile.
Jason suddenly felt proud, something that didn't happen often. Maybe this was going to be a very good tour once they left drydock.
He looked back to the instrument panel. "Rest assured I'll have all of this working before the end of the day and I'll ask the Chief it we can expedite the remainder of the work too."
"Of course," said Rozen standing up. "Whatever it takes Chief... sorry... Assistant Chief," he said with a wide smile. "Ill leave you to your work. If you do ever need help from an decent old Science Officer, if I do say so myself, I am always a Comm away," said Rozen as he took a few steps towards the door.
Not quite able to believe what had just happened Jason, tried to think of something cool to say. He got the impression that Captain Coo was a cool guy, rather than business and brass buttons. "I'll keep that in mind Sir." He allowed a little smile. "And thanks for your confidence in me sir"
Jason saluted as the captain stood at the door. He couldn't think of much else to say.
Rozen returned the salute rigidly.
"Sir? You're welcome anytime, sir," said the young officer. He figured Coo was thinking something like 'Well of course I am, it's my ship' but he couldn't be sure.
Jason was right, but Rozen would never give him the satisfaction. Rozen turned and left the lab.
Rozen smiled to himself as he departed the Science Lab and towards the bridge. Lucas may be young, somewhat of a hot shot, but he was a good Science Officer. He somehow felt comforted that they were both mentored by one of the best Scientists ever known to the Fleet.
