"Mr Kerenal," Adrianna jogged up to the man before he left the ship, "I'm glad I caught you." She had her son on her hip, wide eyed with fascination to the stranger his mother was talking to.
Having found himself turning from the door of the transporter room, Kerenal smiled as the young woman approached him, the youngest of eyes met his oldest and he saw nothing but pure innocence as he moved his gaze to the mother, "What can I do for you, Commander?"
"I heard through the grapevine a little something," she caught her breath and fidgeted Matthias a moment as he had slipped down a little, "I hear you are quite the carpenter."
"I used to be, a century or so ago," the El-Aurian replied with a light chuckle as he shifted his weight to his other leg, "I still dabble from time to time when I can get my hands on a solid selection of wood, my tools should still be in my ship, the Exodus, the one that Tierney bought on board."
"I have no right, but I was wondering if you could take at look at Matthias' cot. It was a gift, and I am hoping to keep it as long as possible, but he is getting strong and has splintered one of the sides a little," she explained, "You don't have to take a look or do anything, but I thought I'd ask before I attempted to find someone else. It's such a traditional art, that there aren't many left in the known universes."
A light smile brushed his lips, "I'd need to recover my tools, but I'm sure I can find the time to take a look, will need to source some wood to repair it though."
"I'll be in your debt," she smiled, "he's currently sleeping in a makeshift cot." The young boy reached a hand out to Kerenal fascinated by the man.
With a gentle touch, the grizzled hand of the carpenter met the hand and his finger was placed in the palm of the child, the age difference and the texture difference was clear between them, "He really is something, such bright eyes."
"He has a hopeful future, if he'd just speak," she chuckled, "Normally he's shy. This is unlike him. He hasn't met an El-Aurian before though. There wasn't one the ship I was stationed at when I had him, and none in the village we lived. He is a year old next week, and still taking in the universes around him."
"He'll speak in time," Kerenal replied as he played with the hand before him, his large finger dwarfing the hand of the young man, "We're quite a rare race, but spread out."
"Indeed you are," she smiled and kissed Matthias' cheek, "Thank you for saying you'd look at the cot though."
"Anytime Commander," Kerenal replied as he withdrew the hand and smiled, a slight bow of the head given to both mother and baby, "Anything that gives me a chance to dabble in a craft again."
"As long as it's not a burden," she replied humbly, "I ask you this as a mere person, not as your exec."
"It'll be interesting," Kerenal replied as he pulled a padd out of his pocket and slid his thumb up the surface, his hand mastering the device and adding in the details, "I've added it to my to-do list," he added with another smile.
"Just give me a bell when you're ready," she smiled, "Matthias I'm sure will appreciate it too." The young boy looked back to his mother before resting his head on her shoulder, still staring at Kerenal.
"I'll let you know when I'm on my way round, for now, I have a few things to pick up," the El-Aurian replied with a chuckle, "I'll stop by my ship and get my tools too."
"Sorry he's staring, it really is unlike him," she chuckled as she played a little with her son's hair with her free hand, "Anyway, I will leave you enjoy your shore leave."
"I trust you and Matthias will enjoy yours too." Kerenal replied as he turned and stepped into the transporter room.
She smiled and headed back to her office to pick up a PaDD she had left there before she could pack to head out, herself.
